The 17th Edition IET Wiring Regulations is a long overdue update on the 16th Edition Wiring Regulations.

All domestic and industrial electrical installations and wiring must conform to these regulations and, in order to align with European documents, the 17th edition contains some substantial changes over the previous edition.

This latest edition of the wiring regulations, distinguished by it's red cover, is produced by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, otherwise known as The IET.

Anyone who is involved in the maintenance, installation and/or design of electrical installations or wiring in buildings will be affected by the 17th edition wiring regulations as would professional engineers and students needing to gain recognised electrical qualifications.

This most recent edition of the regulations will also be important to surveyors, local authorities, electricians, electrical contractors, consultants and architects as well as many other allied trades involved in electrical work.

What is the 17th Edition Amendment ?

It’s seems like only yesterday that the 17th Edition came into effect, but the first amendment to the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations is to be published in June 2011 and will come into effect on January 1st 2012.

The amendment incorporates many changes and additions, including medical locations, electromagnetic influences, surge protection devices, operating and maintenance gangways and changes to certification and reporting.

There are likely to be many more amendments to the 17th Edition over the coming years before the probable release of the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations - which hopefully won’t be for quite some time yet!

This amendment will affect all electricians so we’ve provided a brief summary of the 17th Edition first amendment on our blog and have also included a very useful video link provided by the IET which summarises the amendment clearly and concisely.

As usual, you can subscribe to our 17th edition newsletter to keep abreast of all amendments as and when they happen and keep up to date with many electrical qualifications that are now vital for practicing electricians in the UK.
