The 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations BS 7671 is a long overdue update on the 16th Edition Wiring Regulations.
All domestic and industrial electrical installations and wiring must conform to these regulations and, in order to align with European documents, the 17th edition contains some substantial changes over the previous edition.
This latest edition of the wiring regulations, distinguished by it's red cover, is produced by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, otherwise known as The IET.
Anyone who is involved in the maintenance, installation and/or design of electrical installations or wiring in buildings will be affected by the 17th edition wiring regulations as would professional engineers and students needing to gain recognised electrical qualifications.
This most recent edition of the regulations will also be important to surveyors, local authorities, electricians, electrical contractors, consultants and architects as well as many other allied trades involved in electrical work.

A socket outlet can now be installed in bathrooms subject to being 3m from the edge of a shower or bath and it must be protected by a RCD.
‘Special Locations’ such as photovoltaic power supplies, fairgrounds and amusement parks, marinas, exhibitions and floor and heating systems are now covered in the 17th edition.
The chapters have now been re-structured and re-numbered for alignment with international standards.
With the 16th edition of the regulations having been in place since 1991, the move to the 17th edition signifies the major changes in the contents of the latest edition.
